PM may face an ignominious exit

 DNA 1 April 2011

Apropos the article 'PM manipulating votes is a very serious charge' (DNA,March 31). Corroborative  evidences support the cash-for vote allegation against Manmohan Singh. Unedited sting operation tapes ,the former US ambassador's comment  that WikiLeaks cables being generally accurate,  Singh's statement that he or the Congress didn't authorise anybody to bribe the MPs- an indirect admission that someone else might be involved and the Kishore Chandra Deo Committee's recommendation for a further probe all point to the charge being true.  Like PV Narasimha Rao, Singh may face an ignominiousexit.

BJP SHOULD NOT TOE THE CONGRESS LINE

New Indian Express, 29 MARCH 2011

Sir,
The edit ' BJP's politics of opportunism' (TNIE, March 28 ) has rightly asked the party not to raise doubts about its policies by indulging in lose talks.  The BJP, without Hindutva is not different from Congress as there ARE no policy differences between the two on major national issues.  The party need not feel apologetic in espousing Hindutva as the Supreme Court has upheld that the concept of Hindutva is constitutional. The 'party with adifference'  cannot compete with the Congress when it comes to vote-bank politics.

Be Indian, see Indian

 DNA, 29 March, 2011.

The Sahara Pune Warriors are to be congratulated for introducing classical dancers as IPL team of cheerleaders ('Miniskirts make way for Mohiniyattam in IPL-4' March 27). Why we should ape the western cultures when we have our own rich heritage for showcasing to the world? It is disgusting and embarassing to watch the cheerleaders in the company of family members as they are nothing but scantily-clad girls gyrating to western beats. Even the westerners appreciate departures from such sexploitations.

CONSERVE WATER

 Deccan Herald, March 24, 2011

Sir,
The news '16 litres of water goes waste while you brush your teeth' (DH March 23) is shocking. We allow water to run continuously while brushing, washing hands etc. To prevent this, tap which doesn't allow continuous run of water should be used. Using four litres of water to flush some 500 ml urine should also be avoided. Using mugs and buckets, still prevalent in many houses, is the best to conserve water.  Children should be educated on the economic ways of using water in daily use.

More trouble for UPA

 DNA 19 MARCH 2011

The UPA is slowly collapsing under a series of blows.  Manmohan Singh, the Mr. Clean II, and Sonia Gandhi, the 'tyagi', stand discredited by the latest WikiLeaks revelations on bribe-tainted no-trust vote of 2008. They should resign owning responsibility. Narasimha Rao was hounded out following the JMM bribary episode.  Atal Bihari Vajapayee didn't resort to immoral method when he was short of a single vote for survival but resigned. The WikiLeaks also reveals US interest in UPA's survival.  Indira Gandhi and Vajapayee had the gumption and guts to stand up to US pressure tactics.

CAN'T WE PROTECT KIDS FROM DOGS?

 BANGALORE MIRROR 14 MARCH 2011

The proposed Animal Welfare Act of 2011 hits aam admi. Even action taken in self- defense against animal attacks may be construed as an offense.   Strict action should be taken to prevent cruelty to animals but not at the cost of human safety.  The value of animal life cannot be equated with human life. The Supreme Court has ruled against “active euthanasia” in the Aruna Shanbhaug case. No such strict rules exist against animal euthanasia. It is futile to talk about animal rights without considering the human right for a stray dog-free neighbourhood.

RATIONALISE QUOTA POLICY

Times of India  16 March 2011

This refers to ' Moving Backwards'(March 15). We claim that since independence, the percentage of poor people has significantly decreased. But ironically, more groups are becoming 'backward' and 'scheduled ' castes. According to the author, there is a vested interest in this. As there are poor people in all castes, only a rational approach based on economic criterion for reservation could stop this progressive retrogression.

DECCAN HERALD MARCH 11,  2011.
                                             'CRUEL MAN'
Sir,
This refers to Chickens too 'can feel each other's pain' ( March 10). It is a common sight that crows in pleasure as when food is found, or in pain as when injured, share their emotions by calling other crows.   Poet Valmiki in the epic Ramayana has immortalised the pain suffered by a female krauncha bird (crane) when a hunter killed her mate.
Allegorical poems depicting bird's emotions are found in other languages too. What is empirical and in poet's imagination is  scientifically valid.  But modern man lacks empathy for animals – he cruelly transports and slaughters birds and animals.

Kasab has reasons to smile

BANGALORE MIRROR, 23 FEB, 2011.

This refers to the report 'Death says HC too, but 'remorseless' Kasab keeps smiling' (BM, February22). Pakistan terrorist Ajmal Kasab indeed has reasons to smile. Even after three decades, Rajeev Gandhi's assasins have not been executed. Afzal Guru's is still alive after six years of the death verdict. Kasab would move the Supreme court and seek President's mercy. If he fails in both attempts, his turn for execution will come only after he becomes old and faces a natural death.

LETTERS TO EDITOR

  BANGALORE MIRROR FEB 19, 2011

                                     FAULT LIES WITH SINGH

Manmohan Singh is using coalition compulsion as an excuse to shrug off his responsibility in the 2 G scam. As Nitish Gadkari asked, will he offer the same argument to explain away Adarsh Housing Board,CWG and the S band scams also? Singh now says that he is open to a JPC. If this was his stand three months ago, the logjam of parliament could have been prevented. It is not the opposition and the media that have dented India's image, but the gargantuan corruption t under his nose.

Biased viewpoint

PUBLISHED, DECCAN HERALD, 16 FEB 2011

Sir,
This refers to Empowerment: Dalits &English (DH, Feb15) The view point that English should be taught from class I in all schools is welcome. However to say that only lower caste people are denied English education is not correct. It is the general denial of education to Dalits that has left them behind. In both urban and rural areas those who can afford, irrespective of caste, have access to public school education.   In his passion to project English as the panacea for all Dalit problems,Kancha Ilaiah makes sneering references to Saraswathi, Sanskrit, and the Brahmins. But, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar viewed Sanskrit differently-he advocated Sanskrit as the link language of India.  English is a must but not at the cost of regional languages.
